Advances have been made with regards to the production of tolex amps and it appears that much of this information can be applied to late s tweed amps as well.
In addition, the dating-by-serial number tables have been revised and are more accurate. The bad news is that there is still a lot of work that needs to be done on the silverface amps.

The Code on the tube chart of your Fender Amp is made up of two letters. The First letter equates to the Year and the Second letter to the Month. Reissue amps also use stamped Date Codes. Examples of “Hand Stamped” Date Codes. The source-date code on a pot is a 6 or 7 digit code impressed into the casing of the potentiometer. For speakers this code can be 5, 6, 7 or 8 digits long, and it’s ink-stamped or paint-stamped on the “bell housing” of the speaker.
In either case, the code works the same. The first 3 digits on a pot, or the first 2, 3 or 4 digits on a speaker are the source or manufacturer code. The remaining 3 or 4 digits are the date code. In 3 digit dates code, the 1st digit is the last digit of the year. On 4 digits date codes, the 1st and 2nd digits are the last two digits of the year.

After reading Teagle and Sprung’s excellent Fender amp book, I took them up on their challenge that maybe someday someone will compile enough serial numbers so that Fender amps can be dated that way.
So began my quest. I contacted several Fenders collectors and dealers who were kind enough to supply me with data. I turned to the Internet to do some more networking which resulted in a major turn of events as I met two individuals who have become instrumental partners in this project: Greg Huntington and Devin Riebe.

Blackface amps were immediately popular upon release and used on numerous famous recordings. They continue to be a backline and recording mainstay of musicians who seek a great, chimey Fender clean and, when pushed, a classic overdriven tone. Fender offered a full range of amps in their Blackface line, ranging from the diminutive Champ to the massive Twin Reverb. Cosmetically, the amps featured the aforementioned black control panels with white lettering, black tolex protective covering, and silver thread grill cloth.

Since the Leo Fender and Co. The only sure-fire way to date a Fender Bassman is by matching serial schemes. Find the tube chart located in the back of your amplifier. The tube chart is a diagram detailing what kind of tubes are installed in your amplifier. It will usually be printed on a 4- by 4-inch sticker placed near the tubes in your amp.

Each colour represents a particular Fender “era”, when those different features first appeared. Of course, there’ll be purists who’ll say one era sounds better than the other, but it all comes down to personal opinions. Yes and no. Sure, vintage Fender amps are part of rock’n’roll history, and for mojo and history alone, they’d be worth investing – if you have the money to spare. But for the serious, working musician who plays regular gigs or records often, it wouldn’t be such a great idea.
You’ll see some big names such as Keith Richards, Joe Bonamassa or The Edge using vintage Fender amps onstage – but they can afford to, and it’s no big deal to them.
